Better with Age ...

Olderpreneurs have far more success

Congrats to repeat Wimbledon 🎾 champion Carlos Alcaraz. Talent in 21-year-old legs is hard for even the legendary Novak Djokovic to overcome.

But business is different. In fact – older is better.

Did you know? A 50 year-old founder is twice as likely to achieve upper-tail growth as a 30-something founder.

Age and experience are your secret weapons.

Facts matter.

Despite what you’ve been led to believe, the average age of successful entrepreneurs is 45.

Ageism is alive and well in the startup world. Only facts can defeat the farce of the 25 year old unicorn.

Oh sure - there are a few lightening strikes like Jobs, Gates and Zuckerberg. But they are the outliers.

Simply stated, older entrepreneurs have more success.

There is plenty of data to back this up:

  1. 2020 Age and High-Growth Entrepreneurship study

  2. 2019 Never Stop Creating : A Preliminary Inquiry in Older Adults' Everyday Innovations

  3. 2011 Is There a Peak Age for Entrepreneurship?

Inc. Magazine surveyed over 2.7 million startups and found that the average age is much older than we’ve been told.

Inconvenient facts indeed.

As if I needed yet another reason to not trust media narratives.

In fact, a 60-year-old startup founder is 3 times as likely to found a successful startup as a 30-year-old startup founder.

Here’s just a short list of olderpreneurs and their age at launch:

  • Henry Ford (40) - Ford Motor Co.

  • Leo Goodwin (50) - Geico

  • Ray Kroc (52) - McDonalds

  • Charles Flint (61)- IBM

  • Vera Wang (40)- Bridal boutique

  • Bernie Marcus (49) - Home Depot

  • Bill Porter (54) - E-Trade

  • Chaleo Yoovidhya (53) - Redbull

  • Julia Childs (50)- TV Chef

  • J.R. R. Tolkien (56) - published Lord of the Rings

  • John Warnock (52) - invented PDF

And Morris Chang (55) who just might have created the world’s most important company in Taiwan Semi. “He wasn’t successful despite his age. He was successful because of his age.”
