Consistency beats talent

The power of showing up

In partnership with

Good morning Launch Key 🚀 community!

I hope you’re all enjoying the fantastic fall weather. I used a weekend golf road trip to catch up on disparate podcasts that ranged from AI and bitcoin, to marriage and Hollywood. And there was an interesting common thread: consistency.

It’s the exact same for business success. Showing up wins the long game.

Let's get into it.

Pull to Eject

When we moved from the city to the slower paced coastal life, I knew there would be trade-offs. And one of them is not having a plethora of service choices.

Trying to find a handyman or pest control or HVAC company that will show up - and actually do a good job - leaves a bit to the imagination in the smaller town. They just don’t have enough competition to weed out the wannabees. These boys would starve in Charlotte.

I now live in the fastest growing county in North Carolina. And that means any one of these businesses could become the gold-standard for their service offering. If they just focused on the little things consistently they could print money.

  • Answer the phone

  • Show up 10 minutes early

  • Do what they say

  • Fix problems fast

  • Charge a fair price

Unlike one-hit wonders in music or Hollywood, success in business requires a strong commitment to consistency. Over a long period of time.

Every business can win by doing the little things. Even when they make a mistake, they can gain loyal customers with how they fix them.

Uncertainty can be a deal killer. Focusing on consistency eliminates uncertainty for customers.

Customers want predictability. How many years in a row have the Toyota Camry and Ford F150 been top selling cars and trucks?

If you’ve been reading this newsletter for a while (109 consistent weeks) you expect it every Tuesday morning. Some weeks are better than others. But publishing consistency is now ingrained in my week and it wasn’t 2 years ago.

Your late-career idea can play out the very same way.

A writing habit. A different way to invest. Unique work perspective. Coaching or consulting. A book. A podcast. A product.

What interests you enough to show up on the days you don’t feel like it?

Successful people consistently do what others only do on occasion.

Now go launch something 🚀

Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.
