Don't be a creative voyeur

Focus on your own creativity

Welcome to March, where we can experience 3 seasons in 4 weeks.

In survey responses, new Launch Key subscribers have claimed they aren’t creative enough to start something new. And I think that’s a cop-out.

Everyone has enough creativity.

But it takes effort. And practice.

Let's get to it.

Comment below and let me know if we’re on the right track.

Is it really that hard to be creative?

We’ve all heard people say, “I don’t have a creative bone in my body.” And it’s just wrong.

Does your brain find solutions to problems you face every day? Have you ever had a brilliant solution just pop into your head? Do you find unique answers?

The creative process is the act of making new connections between old ideas.

Sometimes they just ‘come’ to us from our subconscious. Many keep a journal near the bed for those 3 am ‘aha’ moments. Our brains are mulling things over constantly, even when we sleep.

  • But can we solve problems better?

  • Can we time up the creativity to not be when we’re in the shower?

  • Can we forcibly create on a deadline?

John Cleese thinks so.

In 1991, the comedy legend was asked by Video Arts to speak about his experiences with Creativity and the importance of creativity in management and business.

And he thinks you should go into monk mode to focus your creativity.

Create an oasis of space and time. Cleese spends a lot of time trying be open to creative solutions. It’s hard to do because you get sidetracked by minor things that you let crowd your brain while you’re trying to focus. And before you know it, the block of time is diluted.

And it’s easier to do trivial things that seem urgent, than to do important things that are not easy. This procrastination gets the better of us all.

Very few possess Cleese’s humor, but his 1991 speech is 30 minutes of good creative practice ideas that any of us can do.

James Clear attempts to systematically make creative into a 5 step process. And he’s built an entire brand around his creative pursuits.

He uses historic stories of innovative solutions that became standard best practices.

“Being creative isn’t about being the first (or only) person to think of an idea. More often, creativity is about connecting ideas.”

In an online world, companies are forced to create anew. And creativity can be built into a new product with systematic plans. I’ve written a couple of issues aimed at creativity i.e. innovation.

It’s not easy, but creativity can be improved with practice.

Schedule your own Cleese oasis. It probably won’t be as good as the Holy Grail, but you are likely to find more solutions.

So what will become the focus of your creative time?

  • consulting?

  • book?

  • podcast?

  • e-course?

  • newsletter?

  • video?

  • art?

  • other?

Even if you don’t use the process to start a new new thing, creative thinking and innovative solutions can be a benefit in almost any problem you face.

The only downside is that you may have more ideas in the middle of the night.

Write them down.

Now go launch something 🚀
