Just the facts

Trust in the media is at all-time low

In partnership with

Good morning Launch Key 🚀 community!

Despite the froth from both media extremes - more than 70% of us agree on many things:

  • We want to live in safe communities

  • We want our children to have quality education

  • We want everyone to have equal opportunities

  • We want voter ID

But today’s media doesn’t want to cover the things we agree on. They need their clicks.

This months Subscriber Story highlights George Pillari who writes about 7 Deadly Stupidities in business. And Trust in the Media is the one I’m focusing on today.

Let's get into it.

Pull to Eject

For most of my young life I had a laissez-faire relationship with the media. Just give me the facts, and let me form my own opinions. Or so I thought.

I enjoyed writing in college, dreaming of being a writer for Sports Illustrated. But when I learned that my first realistic jobs might entail a decade of writing obituaries for small town newspapers, I sold my soul for a sales job and moved forward into technology.

I dodged a bullet.

Trust in media has declined at a rate even worse than our trust in Congress.

Americans continue to register record-low trust in the mass media, with only 31% expressing a “great deal” or “fair amount” of confidence in the media to report the news “fully, accurately and fairly.”

In a Gallup poll reported last fall, more U.S. adults have no trust at all in the media (36%) than trust it a great deal or fair amount. Biased, activism journalism has destroyed credibility of the once important 4th estate.

Facts matter.

I was angry when I had to do my own research on headline stories. Over time I realized that not trusting an initial narrative – and doing my own research was worth my effort. Many times the retractions or the outright fabrications – are only revised months after the fact or buried deep in a followup article. I’ve educated myself and changed my mind about where I get my information on health, nutrition, politics and even business statistics.

Sunlight is the best disinfectant. Independent journalists and podcasters have forever changed the media landscape.

Love him or hate him, Elon Musk exposing just how many federal government employees infiltrated Twitter (the Twitter files) to deliberately limit free speech and flag things contrary to the mainstream narrative was dystopian.

How many other platforms are still doing the same? How long has this being going on? George Carlin riffed about it 20 years ago in his "Life is Worth Losing" special.

So where do you get your news?

It’s the most important question you need to ask yourself. It’s not political. It’s reality. Are you getting real information on which you can make solid decisions? That is the basis of any business or side hustle that you might start.

Nothing beats doing your own research.

The arc of George Pillari’s career portfolio has encompassed success from the inventors workbench in a college dorm room, all the way up to the corporate Board Room. Then he helped others do the same.

Along the way he has raised over $10 Billion with more than 30 years of experience in scaling, selling, merging and acquiring companies.

And he found that 80% of success is avoiding stupidity.

The business school of hard knocks gave George the idea to put those findings in a book. Using a series of real-life case studies, he shows that decision-making in tense situations is a skill that can be learned and perfected.

Different from other self-help business books that talk about recipes for success, The Seven Deadly Stupidities highlights what you need to avoid in order to be successful. He added a late-career newsletter repurposing Stupidities content which today has more than 30,000 subscribers.
