It was hard to look away last week as the new administration was sworn in and proceeded to take off at 100 mph with their hair on fire. Not the first 100 days, but the first 100 hours!

There’s no telling what can happen if the rest of Washington DC picks up their own pace. But one thing is for sure: a lot of incompetence is being exposed.

Pull to Eject

The promotion of unqualified people has led to a dangerous competency crisis.

I’ve written about incompetence many times, but the 2023 Palladium article (below) was a precursor to exactly what we saw in recent disasters including the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and the Palisades fires.

Arguably one of the most important parts of Trump’s first week was simply demonstrating leadership to citizens in those places. They’ve been front row spectators to the lack of competence.

Marine sentry at the West Wing

If a Marine sentry is at the door of the West Wing, the president is inside.

People in DC saw something last week that they haven’t seen in 4 years - the Marine sentry at 6am and still there after 8pm. Long after the daily communications ‘lid’ had been called.

Entrepreneurs drive the economy. Trump has been called a lot of things, but he’s an entrepreneur at the core.

Business owners are typically the first in and last out. When the boss outworks everyone, the pace picks up or people get replaced. This is the energy released at the White House last week.

Entrepreneurs question authority.

• They challenge assumptions.

• They move fast.

• They adapt on the fly.

• They hire talent.

• They make mistakes.

• They fix it.

• They start over.

And they have the opportunity to change the world.

This entrepreneurial concept is foreign to most politicians, academics and journalists. Inside the beltway is in shock from the speed at which the new administration is moving. They can’t focus. They can’t build a narrative, because by the time they all agree on their talking points that story line is days old. This weekend CBS News posted a story about Senate Democrats meeting Monday to put pressure on their Republican counterparts about Jan 6 pardons.

That was many news cycles ago.

Trump has been to western North Carolina, California and Las Vegas since those pardons. He’s floated no tax on tips, to tax at all and sending IRS agents to help with border security. He told the WEF that we’re not supporting the global agenda. He called out the CEO of Bank of America on an international zoom call. He got a couple of key cabinet members confirmed. He threatened Columbia with tariffs while shooting 3 under par. He learned from his previous administration and he’s not making the same mistakes.

It has literally been shock and awe. And it’s going to peel off a lot of folks who just don’t have the ability to work that hard.

It’s a business lesson for anyone thinking about starting something new.

Plan ahead and take action. Believe in your product and move forward. Don’t wait for the perfect.
