Late career layoffs are picking up
Welcome back to the Launch Key 🚀
Last week’s Wall St Journal article on late-career layoffs is just the latest fact on how fast jobs are being replaced.
And a reminder to get going.
If you’ve been dreaming about starting your own thing, you are running out of runway.
Let's get into it.

I have written many times about timing up your escape from corporate.
You don’t need to quit your day job to start a side hustle. Consulting, newsletters, books, podcasting, creating something completely on your own?
I’ve shown off fellow Launch Key subscribers doing just that.
My pitch has always been: ‘why not start a side hustle before you need one?
Well – more and more of us are going to need one.
The white collar job cuts are accelerating. More than 150,000 high paying jobs were cut last year. And 2025 might have even more by the time we sing Auld Lang Syne.
And to top it off? the last ‘ism’ still thriving in corporate America - Ageism - is booming.
Obviously it makes financial sense to layoff higher paid (read older) workers. But its much harder for late-career professionals to land the next thing.
If you’ve been reading this newsletter for any number of weeks, you’ve seen the articles I’ve tagged about AI growth. You’ve been exposed to Mary Meeker’s view on the speed of AI. And ‘in the news’ topics covered each week.
If you happen to have pipefitting, welding, plumbing or HVAC skills, you’re about to witness the golden age for your business. Your kids or grandkids could benefit from leaning that direction too.
But entry level marketing jobs, researchers, associate type gigs, analysts, even writing and coding - are all being shortlisted by AI.
Young people in those early-career jobs have enough time to retrain and adjust.
We don’t.
Side hustles for late-career folks are based on our knowledge and expertise. Your unique work experience is not easily folded into AI …. yet.
If you happen to be on the white collar side of the equation you better giddyup.
Now go launch something 🚀

Big investors are buying this “unlisted” stock
When the founder who sold his last company to Zillow for $120M starts a new venture, people notice. That’s why the same VCs behind Uber and eBay also backed Pacaso. They made $110M+ in gross profit to date. They even reserved the Nasdaq ticker PCSO. Now, you can join, too.
