Write your own story
You get more of what you think about
Welcome back to the Launch Key 🚀
And a belated Happy Father’s Day to all the dads here. No one had a more perfect day than J.J. Spaun on Sunday when he holed a 64 foot putt to win the US Open at Oakmont.

Spaun didn’t just get to this moment by luck. He dreamt about it. He practiced for years. He remained calm when his ball bounced off the flag stick or landed in a divot. He embraced a rain delay as a good way to restart.
He hung around as the best golfers in the world unraveled. And in the end, he holed an incredible putt for an unforgettable Father’s Day.
You too can write your own story.
Let's get into it.

Optimists and pessimists are both right.
You absolutely get more of what you focus on.
I remember a speaker at a leadership conference talking about her desire to parachute jump. So she went to the class. Learned all you need to know to jump out of a perfectly good airplane. The facility had a large open field complete with a clearly marked landing area.
Everything went according to plan. Perfect weather. Chute deployed. She could see the landing area. But she focused on the fenceline at the edge of the field. “Don’t land on the fence” she told herself. And of course she did and broke her ankle.
Try telling your children to slow down on their bikes. Once the training wheels come off, they only focus on speed. Warnings don’t stick. Your mileage may vary, but we found that only emergency room visits and stitches finally slow them down.
Create an Asymmetric Life
Graham Weaver is founder and managing partner of Alpine Investors private equity firm. He also teaches a top-rated strategic management course at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business (GSB).
His “How to Live an Asymmetric Life” is very good outline for how to stand out. At anything.
As Weaver tells the soon-to-be-minted Stanford MBA’s, the asymmetric life can be created with only 4 simple principles:
Do hard things
Do your thing
Do it for decades
Write your own story
You can’t win at someone else’s dream.
Weaver is a big fan of writing down what you want to accomplish. Don’t worry about the “How.” Instead get the future vision written down in a way that only you see. Where will you be in 5 years? Pick something worth suffering for he says.
Launch Key readers know I believe in writing it down too (see Human-generated Content). It’s not just that you create a vision for yourself, you then have a path to make it happen.
And there is nothing that can stop you, excited for a decade, about doing your thing.
J.J. Spaun knows that today.
He is a very relatable guy. Listen to his interview after winning the US Open and Tiger Woods advice he heard 2nd hand, that he applied on the most important Sunday of his life.
It’s advice for us all.
Stay in the moment. Play your game. Hang around. Don’t do anything crazy.
J.J. Spaun said Max Homa told him a “Tiger story” at lunch one time that helped him win the U.S. Open today...
Tiger knows best.

You don’t have to do anything crazy.
What’s your story?
Now go launch something 🚀
Golf is the closest game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad shots -- but you have to play the ball where it lies.
