AI isn't unique ... you are
Good morning Launch Key 🚀 community!
Lots of subscribers reaching out, asking advice about starting new things this year. Many have the same question about what to focus on first. And my response is simple:
Writing.
Putting your knowledge into content is the first step. Leveraging that into any new career portfolio step is second. So, some resources to help you improve how you tell your story.
Let's get into it.

Pull to Eject
Despite AI headlines, writing well is the one thing successful people will always require.
You don’t need to spend much time on LinkedIn or X to see how many lazy comments are being created by AI. LLM’s generating generic responses or content for your blog, marketing brochure, sales email or pitch deck will only make you … generic.
It’s so common that there are literally free tools that try to humanize the mediocre content generated by AI.
I’m not saying AI isn’t going to be helpful. I’ve highlighted Launch Key subscribers leveraging it and have written a few issues covering how to get started.
There are no shortcuts to authenticity
By now its pretty clear that AI is going to change a lot of businesses.
But it’s not going to replace authenticity.
Take the time to really hone your voice with human-generated content. That you write. From scratch. Like only you can do.
You’ve been writing emails and proposals and powerpoint copy for years. Even if you’re not going to start a new side hustle, improving your writing will benefit your work. Especially in the age of AI.
Two of my favorite young guns are Sam Parr and Shaan Puri who both built successful newsletters with great exits. Here’s Parr with a short clip touting writing as the key business skill.
Last February, they gave away a career’s worth of writing help in a My First Million podcast. This is a fantastic Masterclass for anyone wanting to improve their writing. Complete with examples, stories and links to additional resources, this is 60 minutes worth your time.
Highly Recommend ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!
For many years, I wrote my meeting notes in grid-lined notebooks from Levenger.
I started the practice to help clear up scope creep when it inevitably showed up in a 90’s web design project. Clients figured out that they couldn’t ask for additional things once they realized I had a pretty detailed version of what they said in a previous meeting. When I cleaned out my office, I found stacks of those Notabilia notebooks.
I got away from that practice as we all started to use laptops in meetings. I moved to tools like Evernote and later Notion. Technography moved me away from the tactile note taking to a digital format. And I think I lost something in translation.
Don’t believe me? A recent study showed that Handwriting but not typewriting leads to widespread brain connectivity. Your mileage may vary!
Notabilia history of Rob
So, 2 years ago, I reverted to handwriting my notes again.
Over coffee I wrote, business ideas, to do’s, call notes, topics, followups, introductions for business friends – and the beginning of this very newsletter. I get more done when I write it down.
I also started a daily writing habit. Today I use James Clear’s journals (Baronfig) which are expensive but have an excellent selection of page types for note taking, habit tracking and overall personal organization.
At the end of the day, you need to build a system that works best for you. But the cornerstone is what you write.
The content you produce – your ability to concisely put ideas into words – evolves but can be improved at any age.
And should be the foundation of whatever you do next …
Now go launch something 🚀

Old School Wisdom
Zinsser’s classic should be dusted off and re-read as you work on your writing skills.
It is a book for everybody who needs to do some writing to get through the day, as almost everybody does in the age of e-mail.
Free Knowledge
Sam Parr thinks copywork is so important that he built a 14 day online course.
You don’t need to take the course, you can leverage the copywork idea in the same way that Ben Franklin did. Literally re-writing sales letters or ideas from previous great writers.
